Two Sydney Morning Herald photographers have been named on a shortlist of nominees for this year's Kennedy Awards for Excellence in NSW Journalism.
Andrew Meares and Alex Ellinghausen, both based at Fairfax Media's federal politics bureau in Canberra, are nominated in the categories of outstanding news photo and outstanding portrait, respectively.
Meares received his nomination for a series of photographs taken after the Paris terror attacks in November last year.
In particular, one photo – of a man's face seen through a bullet hole left in glass – made an impression on the Kennedy judging committee.
Ellinghausen's nomination was for a portrait of Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, published in April this year.
Mr Joyce can be seen grinning against a darkened sky as he wears his hat tipped over his eyes.
The nominations were announced on Thursday night, and the two photographers' works will be displayed for two weeks as part of the Power of the Lens exhibition at Riverside Theatres in Parramatta.
For the first time, there will also be a people's choice award; the will be announced at the Kennedy Awards on August 12 at Royal Randwick.
Simon Dulhunty, chairman of the Kennedy Foundation, said: "The images we have received as entries in all pictorial categories are simply stunning.
"They are moving, powerful, beautiful and reflective of the talent that ranks Australia as world leaders in all visual media."
The Kennedy Awards are named for veteran Sydney Morning Herald crime reporter Les Kennedy, who died in 2011.
