HOW we decorate our homes conveys our personality to guests, but our tendency to entertain outdoors means it's the garden that really showcases our style.
Celebrity landscaper and Adbri Masonry ambassador Jason Hodges said this meant it was important to consider every element of your garden and choose a style of backyard that complemented your own.
"It doesn't have to be defined by the area you live in," he said.
"People tend to choose themes that remind them of great times they've had in the past or family holidays they've enjoyed and use them to create a backyard full of memories.
"As a result, there tends to be three key styles that we continue to see more of: a formal rural style, a revisited coastal theme and inner city chic."
Mr Hodges offered tips on how to create the rural-themed backyard.
"The rural style is a more regal, grand look, reminiscent of an estate in the French countryside, and is ideal for larger properties with keen gardeners," he said.
"Anyone can add some French-flavoured country style to their backyard by selecting the right colours, materials and plants.
"Create the illusion of more space by adding grass and define zones using fencing, plants or materials such as pavers, grass or gravel.
"An evergreen hedge creates a structured look and a splash of green in winter.
"Terraced retaining walls add to the grandeur and scale of the space."
Mr Hodges said a coastal theme would include hardy plants and nautical props.
Creating a coastal style garden is one way to enjoy your own personal coastal sanctuary all year round," he said.
"Choose light-coloured pavers and pebbles with accents of timber.
"Hard-wearing, low-maintenance plants, grasses and palms are best. They will add a splash of green and help set the scene."
Mr Hodges said adding seaside props such as hammocks, deck chairs and wind chimes would help create a relaxed, tropical feel.
