Parramatta Sun readers can share their favourite stories in the farewell edition

READERS of the Parramatta-Holroyd Sun are invited to share their favourite memories of the newspaper for its upcoming final edition.

Fairfax Media’s Australian Community Media division has confirmed plans to close six of its free weekly newspapers in Sydney’s west and north-west.

The Parramatta-Holroyd Sun, Hills News, Blacktown Sun, St Marys-Mt Druitt Star, Penrith City Gazette and Rouse Hill Courier will publish their farewell editions in the week commencing December 18.

The restructure of ACM’s suburban Sydney publishing operations includes the launch of a new weekly magazine serving suburbs in the city’s north-west in early 2018.

Affected staff were briefed at the company’s Bella Vista office on November 30 following two weeks of consultation.

While detailed analysis determined that the six newspapers are no longer commercially sustainable, ACM will continue to offer an extensive suite of digital advertising solutions and marketing products to local businesses in the markets where its print strategy is changing.

The closures were originally outlined to staff on November 9.

A voluntary redundancy program has opened for staff at the affected sites and recruitment to open roles created by the restructure is under way, along with discussions about redeployment opportunities within the ACM regional, rural and suburban publishing network which stretches into every state and territory.

ACM will continue to publish 10 community newspaper titles across the greater Sydney region: the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader, Campbelltown Macarthur Advertiser, Camden-Narellan Advertiser, Wollondilly Advertiser, Blue Mountains Gazette, Hawkesbury Gazette, Hawkesbury Courier, Liverpool City Champion and Fairfield City Champion.
