The Salvation Army Parramatta's Christmas Cheer donation drive in full swing

All Salvation Army Parramatta Major Grant Sandercock-Brown wants for Christmas is for everyone to enjoy a happy festive season.

December is the busiest time of year for the Salvos, which has recently been inundated with non-perishable food and toy donations for its Christmas Cheer operation to provide gifts and food hampers for those in need.

“It varies from year to year but we hope to help 200-300 families, mostly from the Parramatta LGA,” Major Sandercock-Brown said.

“It’s a whole community effort. We have community and corporate volunteers. One of the groups we partner with is the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, which is celebrating its 30th year.”

Donations of new toys and gift cards can be dropped off at the Salvation Army’s Parramatta headquarters in Smith Street.

“The community has been very generous so far,” Major Sandercock-Brown said.

“We have plenty of food donations, what we need now is toys, especially for the older age groups, which are often forgotten about”

Gifts for boys in the 10-14 year age group are especially needed. Suggestions include sporting equipment or club jerseys.

A $29 donation to the Salvos Christmas Appeal will provide a box of emergency supplies or put a gift under the tree for someone in need.

Everyone is welcome attend the Salvos annual Christmas concert and carols this Saturday, 5-8pm at 34 Smith Street, Parramatta.
