Parramatta Council needs the community’s help!
The council has called for community feedback on a proposed model for Parramatta’s new aquatic centre and has set up an online survey.
It has proposed to build a facility with four heated pools, a fitness centre, an all-abilities water play park, on-site café, and parking for 200 cars.
It would include a 10 lane 50m outdoor pool, an outdoor leisure pool, a dedicated (indoor) learn to swim pool, and a 25m indoor pool to allow swimming all year round.
It follows extensive consultation already undertaken and the completion of a draft feasibility study.
Feedback will inform the business case for the centre, which will be considered by the council in December.
The council is working closely with residents, Parramatta Park Trust, the state government and other stakeholders to deliver a modern complex that meets the needs of a rapidly growing community.
“We know how important swimming facilities are to our community and their feedback has been integral in the development of the model Council is now considering for Parramatta’s new pool,” Parramatta lord mayor Andrew Wilson said.
“The new aquatic leisure centre will be a significant investment for Council so we want to ensure that we achieve the best outcome for our City and its residents, and I encourage the community to have their say on the facilities we are proposing to include.”
Additional features that could be considered for inclusion in the aquatic leisure centre if more funding were to become available include diving facilities, a crèche, a hydrotherapy pool, water slides, increased parking and a multiuse indoor sports hall.
Community submissions close November 22.
Parramatta Park Trust has confirmed a site on the former golf course, near the corner of Park Parade and Pitt Street in the Mays Hill precinct as the preferred location for the swimming centre.
Construction will begin next year, following detailed design work and the granting of planning approval, with the pool expected to be complete and operational by March 2020.
The pool involves an investment of $30 million from the council in addition to the $30 million pledged by the state government.
