Cricket Australia will host free community level one cricket courses across the country this upcoming cricket season.
The free courses start in August and are expected to attract more than 3000 participants across the country.
West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club will host a course on Sunday, September 17, 2017.
David Moore, Cricket NSW General Manager of Cricket Performance, welcomed the ground-breaking program.
“This is a wonderful initiative by Australian cricket to upskill junior cricket coaches in Australia,” he said.
“Without people putting their hand up to coach teams many of our grassroots participants would not be able to play the game.
“The fact that we can now provide those wonderful volunteers a chance to learn more about the game and the art of coaching free of charge is a great way of assisting in the improved experience our grassroots cricketers will receive.”
The initiative is targeted at developing coaching skills in junior cricket, by making the courses more accessible to parents, volunteers and all budding cricket coaches.
The course usually costs $120 per person but will now be offered for free.
Cricket Australia’s head of junior cricket and Australian cricket great Belinda Clark said it was an opportunity for a national approach to supporting junior coaches.
“Grassroots cricket is the lifeblood of cricket in Australia, and we are committed to investing at this level,” she said.
“We want all Australian cricket participants to have an enjoyable and safe experience, and ensuring our grassroots coaches have the training and resources to be able to provide this is important.”
All courses are run by accredited staff trained by Cricket Australia. The course is accredited by the Australian Sports Commission and endorsed by the International Cricket Council.
The coaching course will provide coaches with access to online resources, and include training on the revised Junior Formats which are currently being introduced around Australia.
People can register for the free course by signing up online at the Cricket Australia Coaching website, completing an online Introduction to the course and selecting a course in their region.
