Raffles design students on show

Wilson Nguyen and Pimnarra Sangngern know their neats from their knife-pleats.

The Raffles College of Design and Commerce graduates will showcase their work at the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA).

Nguyen graduated from the Parramatta college in 2015 and won the Excellence in Major Project award for his final graduate collection.

In May 2016, Nguyen was invited to showcase his graduate collection at China Graduate Fashion Week in Beijing, China.

He said although he has had a taste of both male and female fashion, his heart is set on designing men’s wear.

“My brand, Warrawut, focuses on presenting modern style in menswear with traditional detail inspired by many spectrums, from geometry to the geometry of the body,” the 25-year-old said.

“After arriving in Australia from Vietnam, I was really surprised to see so many different men’s styles. When I walk the streets I see men in suits that are really formal, or more casual in street style, or just basic.

“Back in Asia there is much less variety. The men there dress very formal and they all wear really similar styles.”

The Raffles College of Design alumnus said he admires the work of Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto.

“I really like the structure, feel and detail of his pieces,” he said.

The designer stitched together his passion and vision to create a 10-piece collection which he will debut at Carriageworks for Fashion Week.

Nguyen’s Warrawut collection will show alongside six other alumni designers as part of the Raffles International Showcase on May 18.

Sangngern first showed her work at Fashion Week in 2013.

“After that opportunity I started my own label NARA and have been working on various collections ever since,” the 27-year-old said.

As a child Sangngern migrated from Thailand to the US where she observed and absorbed a working woman’s culture.

“This influenced my brand’s direction and is the DNA of NARA,” she said.

“Since the 1940s in the US women had worked alongside men. It was an influential era in women’s history. Women are knowledgeable, capable and intelligent and equal to men.”
