Western Sydney’s food scene is exploding with new flavours. The quality of food that is now on offer at our doorsteps would put the fanciest restaurants of my childhood to shame.

Parramatta will welcome with open arms (and mouths) BL Burgers – a spin-off of Sydney’s famous Bar Luca.

Bar Luca co-owners Sarah and James Robbins said they wanted to give the people of Sydney a taste of their mouth-watering beef and buns, and that’s how BL Burgers was born.

Mrs Robbins was the former head chef at The Dolphin Hotel in Surry Hills.

“Some of the owners from The Dolphin left and bought Bar Luca and asked James and I to come on board,” she said.

“After becoming co-owners we decided to make a spin-off which became BL Burgers.”

The pair opened their first store in Darlinghurst in 2016, following a store in Bondi, and will today open its Parramatta doors.

I grew up in the Hawkesbury. There's a huge demand for quality burgers in the west so we wanted to give the people what they've been asking for.

“I’m from a fine dinning background and James is a pastry chef by trade but burgers were just what was on trend at the time and were selling really well,” Mrs Robbins said.

“At first we had a bistro style menu with pastas, salads and a whole variety to choose from, but the burgers were the big sellers and kept people coming back. We saw the demand and just went for it.”

But don’t let the name fool you, BL Burgers are more than just burgers. They also offer loaded fries, house cut sweet potato wedges, buffalo chicken wings, sticky lamb riblets and even have gluten and dairy free options.

“We’re both very creative and still want to give our customers choice,” she said.

“We have weekly specials and play around a lot with new creations.”

If you’re spoilt for choice and can’t decide what to settle on, Mrs Robbins said her personal favourites are the Classic Cheese added with bacon and the Blame Canada.

“There are plenty to choose from and you have the option of customising,” she said.

“We’ve got our head chef Michael Villalon who’s been with us for almost a year now so he definitely knows his way around the grill and makes a mean burger!”
