It might be the era of Netflix and iTunes but don't write off the DVD just yet.
Even with the rise of streaming services and web sites that rent and sell movies, Australians bought more than $800 million worth of DVD and Blu-ray discs last year.
At a time when the the format should be headed for extinction, amid the wholesale closure of DVD rental stores, we bought 44 million discs largely to add to our movie and television show collections.
While overall sales slid for the fifth consecutive year - down 11 per cent last year - there were actually increases for both new release movies (up 4 per cent) and TV series (up 17 per cent).
Statistics that will be released by the Australian Home Entertainment Distributors Association on Friday show that what we are not buying on disc any more are older movies - the sort of material that is available on streaming services and that we might already have on a shelf at home.
The figures are a stark contrast to music sales, where streaming services outstripped both digital downloads or CD sales last year.
The association's chief executive, Simon Bush, says DVD and Blu-ray discs are proving "incredibly resilient" despite the rise of Netflix, Stan and other streaming services and the popularity of iTunes, BigPond Movies, Foxtel Store, Google Play Movies and other platforms for renting and buying movies.
"People have invested a lot in their big TVs and surroundsound and Blu-ray players so they've got the hardware," he says. "So the software is still popular.
"Prices have come down and people love the content."
The biggest seller on disc last year was the cinema blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Next was another big cinema hit, Deadpool, then, surprisingly, the comic Australian drama The Dressmaker.
Rounding out the top 10 were Game of Thrones Season Five, Zootopia, Spectre, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Martian, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II and The Secret Life Of Pets.
"They're the ones that do well at the box office," Bush says. "And they're the ones that carry over and do well on DVD and Blu-ray."
The value of streaming services surged by more than 180 per cent last year - up from $149 million to $419 million.
But there was still a 14 per cent increase in buying films and TV shows digitally to $263 million.
And that was on top of Australians spending a record $1.259 billion on cinema tickets last year, which shows the power of popular movies when it comes to how we spend our leisure time.
Bush says that "collectability" remains the biggest reason for buying discs over digital versions of movies, although a survey indicated that 42 per cent of purchases were gifts.
A key factor is boosting sales was distributors cutting the time from cinema release to home entertainment release from 120 to 90 days.
"We're getting the content that consumers want quicker and across all these platforms," Bush says.
He believes the crackdown on piracy is also boosting movie and TV viewing across all legal platforms.
"There's been a massive increase in legitimate consumption," he says. "Everyone accepts that there's plenty of new stuff out there at various different price points so you can't complain that it's expensive or you can't find it."
All these factors have meant the decline for DVDs and Blu-rays have been slower than expected since the peak year for the format, when 77 million discs worth $1.39 billion were sold in 2009.
