Surgical oncologist at Westmead Hospital, Julie Howle, has taken first place in the hospital’s 20th annual triathlon held at Parramatta.
Surgeons, anaesthetists and other staff competed in teams or individually in a 500-metre swim, 16 kilometre bike ride and 6.4 kilometre run.
The event began in 1992 with the support of anaesthetist Peter Klineberg, an avid cyclist.
“Cycling is a great way to unwind and relax and provides a great outlet for what can often be a stressful and challenging job,’’ he said.
‘‘The team triathlon allows hospital staff to meet in a non-work environment and is great for morale.
“This is a challenging course that tests the endurance, fitness and competitiveness of staff who take part.’’
Associate Professor Klineberg said Dr Howle had done well to beat the teams as an individual competitor.
“The triathlon is always a fierce competition, but at the same time it highlights the camaraderie and sportsmanship of our staff at Westmead Hospital,’’ he said.
Dr Howle said she enjoyed the event and appreciated the effort that went towards organising it.
“I am so proud that I could push myself to the limit and still be able to come out on top,’’ she said.
Dr Howle will compete next in the Triathlon World Championships in Auckland.
