AS founder and CEO of Youth Off The Streets, I would like to wish all the students in our services who are completing their Higher School Certificate this year, good luck with their Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams.
Every year in Australia around 50,000 young people aged from 15 to 19 drop out of education and training, and are unemployed.
Many of these young people have suffered disadvantage due to family breakdown, mental illness, substance abuse, poverty, and are at risk of disengaging entirely from positive community interaction such as employment and training.
Youth Off The Streets believe education is the key to preventing these young people from becoming reliant on welfare and suffering the effects of prolonged isolation.
Every year I am amazed by the students that come into our Step Up Program, where we teach year 11 and 12. These kids have faced unbelievable barriers to achieving their education; they come to us with nobody to have faith in them and with little belief in themselves.
We provide a flexible and individualised education curriculum to our kids and we have watched these young people finding their feet again and reaching towards their goals by taking their HSC exams, finding employment, progressing into further education and training, and even just finding suitable accommodation.
All these kids need is to know that somebody believes in them.
Being a teacher at one of our accredited, independent high schools, Chapel School in Merrylands, I am lucky enough to see the outcomes that a little belief has on our kids every day.
