Lily Allen's cutting response to Donald Trump on Brexit

Trump, who is in Scotland for the opening of his new golf course, tweeted that the country was "going wild over the vote. They took their country back, just like we will take America back. No games!"

Yet in the referendum, Scotland overwhelmingly voted to remain in the European Union, with all 32 councils in Scotland voting against the exit.

Despite the region's majority vote to remain of 62 per cent to 38 per cent, Scotland could be forced to exit the EU along with the rest of the United Kingdom following the overall success of the exit campaign.

In a press conference on Friday, Scotland's first minister Nicola Sturgeon said a referendum to leave the UK was "likely" in order to remain in the EU.

Trump has continued to speak out in favour of the British exit from the European Union, even drawing parallels with his campaign for the US presidential election.

In another tweet, he said "many people are equating BREXIT... with what is happening in the U.S. People want their country back!"

Allen's tweet to Trump has been shared over 15,000 times since she posted it on Friday, with BBC reporter James Cook agreeing the comments "catastrophically" misunderstood Scotland's position.

Lily Allen also expressed concerns that the majority's vote could be responsible for bringing about an economic crash. 

Many other British celebrities including Hugh Laurie, former One Direction member Zayn Malik, and Harry Potter author JK Rowling have also taken to social media to share their disappointment with the results of the referendum.

Others expressed their concern about the possible impact of the decision on Britain's younger generations, including singer Ellie Goulding and CBS late-night host James Corden.
