RESIDENTS can still attend two related major African events at Auburn and Granville on October 26 and 27.
The events are the 2012 African Conference on October 26 at Auburn Centre for Community, 44A Macquarie Road, Auburn, from 9.30am to 3pm; an African Women's Dinner Dance is on October 27 from 4.30pm to 11.30pm at Grand Royale, 51 South Street, Granville.
The annual African Women's Dinner Dance is expected to attract more than 500 women from most of the 53 African countries.
The traditional African fashion parade is the most anticipated and colourful part of the evening, and the women will also be entertained by a range of African performance groups.
It is organised by the African Women's Group (AWG) to combat the loneliness and isolation many African Australian women feel.
AWG representative Rosemary Kariuki from Blacktown spoke of the loneliness she felt when first arriving in Sydney.
"I arrived with one bag and $300 in my pocket," she said. "I got off the plane and looked around for another African face.
"I spotted an Ethiopian woman across the terminal and ran towards her as if she were my sister. She helped me and let me stay with her during my first few weeks here. If it were not for her, I would be lost."
