Marconi crowned NSW champions

Marconi Stallions pulled off the upset of the NSW Premier League season by edging out runaway premiers Bonnyrigg White Eagles 2-0.

The cagey match had plenty of talking points but it was a cool double from Marconi midfielder Nathan Elasi who decided the contest.

The former Melbourne Victory attacker was a constant menace for Bonnyrigg and stamped his authority on the game by scoring a left footed shot on the stroke of half-time.

His goal would prove decisive with Marconi hanging on to the lead until the dying minutes when Elasi outsmarted the defence and struck again.

Bonnyrigg will feel cheated to say the least after dominating the first-half and cruising before the first goal.

This season’s runaway premiers were the undeniable grand final favourites but couldn’t convert their chances in front of 5500 home supporters.

Robert Younis was unlucky not to open the scoring for Bonnyrigg when his thunderous shot 30th minute shot was palmed away by Marconi goalkeeper Andrew Mailer.

Several chances followed for the White Eagles but Adrian Ucchino or Younis could capitalise with both their shots going wide.

After Elasi’s goal, Marconi settled in the second half and frustrated the hosts who were restricted to couple of opportunities.

Bonnrigg’s final opportunity fell to attacker Mitchell Long who had a powerful header saved on the line.

Marconi responded by grabbing another goal against the run of play to seal the game 2-0.

Coach Luke Casserly praised his Marconi team and compared the achievement to the club’s 1992/93 championship win.

 “I was involved in the side that won the title in the NSL in 1992-1993 and that was tremendous, and to now do it as a coach is just as special,’’ Casserly said.

“I know how passionate everyone is at this football club and for the club to have gone so long without a League win, and to finally get it today is just tremendous.”
