Traffic chaos in Merrylands West

A BURST water main is causing major traffic delays in Merrylands West.

Roads have been closed in both directions — between Centenary Road and the Cumberland Highway — since 6.51am with drivers being asked to reduce speeds and exercise caution while Sydney Water fixes the problem.

Eastbound traffic is being diverted into Jersey Road.

Two streets also remain without water: Thames and Serpentine streets.

‘‘They will be without water until early to mid-afternoon," Emma Whale, a spokeswoman for Sydney Water, said.

‘‘Two crews (from Sydney Water) are on site.

‘‘A streetsweeper will try to clean up one side of the road, so it can at least be opened. That, again, will be by early- to mid-afternoon.

‘‘We always apologise for the inconvenience."

Ms Whale said the job was logged with Sydney Water at 6.21am and there were crew on site at 6.52am.

‘‘Given it was such a big water main we got water off by 8 o'clock and had to close the road," she said.
