UPDATE
Figtree Private Hospital has apologised to the NBL after a fan sitting in its box tipped beer on a Sydney Kings player at their clash with the Illawarra Hawks on Wednesday night.
“Figtree Private Hospital has apologised to the Sydney Kings and the Illawarra Hawks for the actions of an elderly gentleman who was a guest in the hospital’s box last evening,” a statement from the hospital said.
“The 83-year-old father of a long-term, valued employee, has some cognitive impairment and does not recall the incident. His family are very regretful of the incident and have indicated they will be making a formal apology on his behalf,” it said.
During the third quarter at WIN Entertainment Centre, Sydney Kings player Marcus Thornton looked to drive to the hoop but slipped, sliding softly into the advertising boards behind the hoop - when he suddenly got a nasty surprise.
The man then continued sipping his beer nonchalantly while eyeing the young shooting guard, who was understandably livid.
The spectator was then ejected from the game with the fourth quarter still to play and the Hawks holding a slender lead. Sydney went on to lose the match 96-90.
Thornton said he "saw a little bit" of the incident when interviewed by Fox Sports after the game. "It's unfortunate, but it is what it is and we move on."
He was asked if the fan should be given a lengthy suspension, he replied: "I'm not sure. That's not my call," he said. "I know [the NBL] will take the responsibility. That's their call and that will be that."
Twitter lit up with complaints about the spectator with current NBL players and coaches joining in.
