Seven Paralympians from western Sydney joined 4000 athletes from 162 countries today for the Paralympic opening ceremony in London.
The 161-strong Australian team marched around the Olympic Stadium in an athletes' parade with the lighting of the Paralympic Cauldron to follow the procession.
Film director Stephen Daldry, who directed the award-winning musical Billy Elliot, organised the ceremony which included a cast of 3000 volunteers and actors.
The opening ceremony had the theme of ‘‘Enlightenment’’ and was designed to celebrate the inclusivity of the Paralympics.
Western Sydney cycling duo Simone Kennedy and Jayme Paris start their Paralympic campaigns on Friday in the C3-3km individual pursuit and C1-2-3 500m time trial respectively.
