It has been billed as one of the greatest fireworks displays in the world and thousands of people are expected to watch the light show from Taronga Zoo, enticed by panoramic views of the harbour and a night of entertainment.
Ticket prices range from $170 to $500 per person, with proceeds going towards conservation work and breeding programs for Asian elephants.
While the zoo is a pricey way to spend New Years Eve, there are plenty of vantage points across Sydney that people can enjoy for free:
1. Illoura Reserve, Balmain East
- A nice option for viewing in the inner west, with vision of Cockatoo Island and the western side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. There is room for 3000 people.
2. Blues Point Reserve, McMahons Point
- A popular spot with views of the western side of the bridge and the Opera House. About 12,000 people are expected to fill capacity late in the day on Wednesday. No entry fee. There is food and drink for sale, but no alcohol or glass allowed.
3. Bradfield Park, North Sydney
- With views of the Western side of the bridge, about 50,000 people are expected to fill capacity late in the day on Wednesday.
4. Duff Reserve, Point Piper
- A major hotspot, there is only room for 100 people at this exclusive spot, so get in early. Once capacity is reached, the site will be closed. Entry is free, but pack your own food and drinks because there are none available for purchase. No alcohol, no glass, no pets and no disabled access.
5. Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay
- A capacity of 7,500 is expected to be reached early in the day.
