St Edmund's College student Jordan Jackson-Hope was sent off for a dangerous spear tackle in the second minute of the Australian Schools' 39-21 loss to New Zealand Barbarians in Wellington on Tuesday.
The Australian flyhalf was shocked to be shown a red card by the referee after he upended the Kiwi No.9 Liam Howley at the start of the game.
Australian Schools coach Steve Philpotts said the loss of Jackson-Hope put them on the back foot.
"Losing our flyhalf so early in the match was not ideal for our game plan, so we had to adjust to that," Philpotts said after the game.
"We were a bit shell-shocked in those first 10 minutes but we remained patient and put ourselves in good positions to capitalise on the Barbarians' errors.
"I am very proud of the way we tried to play for the full 70 minutes, considering we were a man down for most of the match."
They finish their tour against New Zealand Schools on Saturday.
