A toll on the M4 would spell disaster for Parramatta's roads and motorists, said Labor councillor Pierre Esber.
Cr Esber has reacted angrily to the State and Federal Governments’ intention to reinstate the toll on the motorway between Concord and Parramatta after the Westconnex is built.
The Toll on the widened section of the M4 would be between $1.50 and $3.90 in 2013 dollars, he said.
“Cars will just pile onto Parramatta Rd for a free ride, which puts paid to the government’s intention to beautify that stretch of road,” Cr Esber said.
“I couldn’t believe when I read about the Federal and State Governments plan to reimpose the toll after building two extra lanes on the M4 when the first stage of Westconnex is built in 2017.”
Cr Esber said heavy trucks avoiding the toll would clog suburban roads, including in Parramatta.
“According to the EIS on Westconnex, motorists will be worse off than if the project was not built - a ridiculous outcome,” he said.
“I know toll revenue will help fund the rest of the WestConnex, but with the predicted outcome making travelling worse for Western Sydney motorists, there has to be another way. The model presented in the EIS report predicts that the project would increase traffic during the day and the evening on Parramatta Rd at Auburn and on Victoria Rd at Rydalmere."
Cr Esber said the comments by Roads Minister Duncan Gay that the benefits of WestConnex would be realised when the entire motorway was operating was “an insult" to already-frazzled motorists who were looking forward to some relief from the much-heralded project.
"Motorists might get a faster run on the widened M4, but they will still be sitting in a paid car park once they reach Parramatta Rd," Cr Esber said.
“How much more pain can Western Sydney motorists take.”
