Parramatta will host a special Reading Hour this month to support the National Year of Reading 2012.
The Reading Hour is open to everyone and starts from 11am-12pm at Parramatta Library and, 10:30am-11:30am at all brach libraries on August 25.
Parramatta Lord Mayor Lorraine Wearne said children had the best chance of becoming good readers if parents shared 10 minutes a day reading with them.
“Most of our brain development happens between birth and three years of age, so parents need to share stories and rhymes right from day one,” she said.
Parramatta libraries will also run a photographic competition to further inspire the community to enjoy reading.
Entrants to the competition, named Who do you read to?, need to send in their best reading photos to go into the draw to win prizes. Examples could include snaps of you reading to family, friends, with someone overseas via Skype, or even aloud to a pet.

Photos can be submitted to any Parramatta library branch and must be before Monday September 10.
The winners will be announced in early October.
