Talks on the future have X-factor

IDEAS may fall a close second to love in terms of what makes the world turn, but it will be people who love ideas inspiring western Sydney's future.

Ideas from and about western Sydney will be the hot topic at the first TEDx Parramatta next month.

TED talks — the virtual conferences devoted to technology, education and design — have been viewed more than 114 million times on its YouTube channel.

Having secured a license under the TED brand, Parramatta's Information Cultural Exchange has invited some of western Sydney's most inspirational thinkers to take to the stage.

Project co-ordinator Michael Ching said the event would be a place where people could hear what plans and potential there were for communities to shape western Sydney.

"To me it seems almost like a digital renaissance," he said.

"TEDx is inspiring in that it brings people together to talk about what they are doing in all these various fields and to share that with everyone is incredible."

The theme for the Parramatta event is "Beginning, Becoming, Beyond".

Jonathan Champ, who secured the TEDx license, said the theme represented a story in progress.

"There is heritage and history in western Sydney; many firsts, changes and innovations," he said.

"The city has seen massive changes in technology, education and culture and is home to organisations and individuals who continue that tradition of renewal for western Sydney and its diverse communities."

Details: TEDx Parramatta is on from 10am to 4pm, August 3 at Riverside Theatres.
