Teachers on strike today

Thousands of children all around Parramatta will get two hours off school tomorrow, as teachers go out on strike.

Public school teachers decided that they would hold a stop work meeting tomorrow from 9am to 11am.

The industrial action is being held to protest the new powers principals are set to be given by the state government.

Earlier today a Department of Education spokesman said parents would be informed of any changes to the regular school time table.

"The Department of Education and Communities advises that if industrial action proceeds, public schools will communicate with parents in writing advising of arrangements at individual schools," he said.

"If parents have any concerns about the arrangements at their children's schools they should contact the school directly."

The Empowering Local Schools Initiative which aims to give principals more decision making influence at a local level, has encountered strong opposition from concerned teachers.
