A University of Western Sydney flagship campus will be located in the heart of the Parramatta central business district.
The preferred site for the campus tower is 169 Macquarie Street, part of the Parramatta Square development, and will be a centrepiece of the concentrated urban renewal project.
UWS Vice-Chanellor Professor Barney Glover, Parramatta Lord mayor Cr John Chedid and managing Director of Leighton Properties, Mr Mark Gray will make the announcement to the public today.
Cr Chedid said Council would sell the site to Leighton Properties, which will provide innovative public domain facilities for community use.
“We know great universities strengthen great cities – and this is a major milestone in our vision for Parramatta Square, helping make Parramatta a true city of the 21st Century,” Cr Chedid said.
“As the first major tenant in Parramatta Square, UWS will help to boost private sector interest in future stages of the project.”
WS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover, said Leighton Properties was selected as the preferred development partner based on the strength of the building’s design, flexibility and prominence.
“The University’s plan to develop a high-rise campus is an important milestone in UWS’s history,” said Professor Glover.
“This project forms a vital part of the University’s strategy to significantly expand its international student population, and will be a focal point for our postgraduate programs. The prime CBD location will embed UWS in the social, economic and civic life of Parramatta and Greater Western Sydney.”
The building will be 15 stories high – with 14 of those occupied by UWS – including a plant area on the rooftop.
Construction work is expected to begin in early 2015 and be completed for the first university semester in 2017.
About the new campus location – Parramatta Square
The building is known as ‘1PSQ ’ or ‘One Parramatta Square’ - located on the corner of Macquarie and Smith Streets.
Parramatta Square is a three-hectare, mixed-use redevelopment precinct, located in the Parramatta CBD, bounded by Church, Macquarie, Smith and Darcy Streets.
Parramatta Square will include around 190,000sqm of retail and commercial development, more than 500 apartments, and new council facilities including an administration centre, library and community centre.
Parramatta Square will see Parramatta emerge as a vibrant, connected and liveable city in the heart of Sydney.
The UWS building will be located in prime position at the eastern end of Parramatta Square and will be highly visible on the Parramatta skyline.
The site is already a major thoroughfare for pedestrians moving to and from the Parramatta Transport Interchange to the rest of the CBD. This will be enhanced through the development of Parramatta Square public domain, which will provide more direct linkages and better public and retail amenities.
The piazza to the south of the building, located at the eastern end of Parramatta Square, will be the forecourt to the UWS campus entry, and will tie the UWS campus into the revitalised heart of Parramatta.

The building’s design is the result of a competitive competition won by the firm, Architectus.
The building includes a central atrium through the podium of the building from the ground floor to Level 8. The atrium connects the podium floors and offers the opportunity to move between floors and create a vertical campus.
Located against the southern façade of the building, the vertical volume of the atrium engages with the southern courtyard and draws the occupants of the building into Parramatta Square.
The top of the podium provides the opportunity for an accessible roof terrace with exceptional views to the north and the east.
