DESPITE doubting his winning chances as a finalist in the 2014 Holroyd City Local Business Awards, Greystanes resident Patrick Halaka took home the youth award on May21.
‘‘I was so nervous when I found out I became a finalist. I didn’t think I had a chance,’’ the 24-year-old said.
Mr Halaka, who has been Wenty Leagues Club’s communications co-ordinator since 2011, said he was shocked when his name was called during the awards dinner at Merrylands RSL Club.
‘‘I sat there not moving and my dad had to tell me to get up on the stage,’’ the former St Paul’s Catholic College student said.
‘‘It was nice to be recognised for the work I do in community,’’ he said.
‘‘I love what I do and I know all the others were nominated because they also have a passion for their work.
‘‘I’m thankful to the community groups I work with because they’ve given me a more realistic view of what happens in the Parramatta and Holroyd regions; and the opportunity to see their projects and report on it first hand to Wenty Leagues’ 50,000 members.’’
Mr Halaka’s role involves writing for the club’s bi-monthly magazine, looking after social media, managing website content and expanding the club’s brand.
