Westmead's Crown Princess Mary Cancer Care Centre was transformed into a beauty school last week with volunteer beauticians and hairdressers treating women living with cancer to free makeovers.

The beauty workshop treated patients to skin therapy sessions and individualised advice on how to combat the visible effects of chemotherapy, radiation and other medical treatments at the centre last Thursday.

"They're all lovely girls," said Guildford breast cancer patient Louise Fraley, 57, of the volunteers.

"For me, it just makes you feel more confident, less self-conscious about things."

Ms Fraley said she didn't wear much make-up previously, but had enjoyed two Look Good Feel Better workshops since her diagnosis, and found the advice useful.

The event, an initiative of the Look Good Feel Better Foundation, launched at Westmead Hospital in 1990, also marked 24 years of the organisation's work in improving the confidence of cancer patients.

Topics covered included cleansing and moisturising to combat dryness, redness, dark circles and pigmentation, how to draw on eyebrows and lashes, scalp care and wig fitting.

The foundation's state program manager Joanne Meehan said 1500 volunteer "angels" skilled in hairdressing or cosmetics helped up to 10,000 patients face cancer with confidence each year.

"The ladies might come in a little bit quiet to begin with, but by the time they've left they're talking and smiling — that's our aim," she said.

Cancer care centre director Professor Paul Harnett spoke at the anniversary event about the importance of the program to his patients.
