About 100,000 Salvation Army volunteers will be hitting the streets this weekend to raise funds for the annual Red Shield Appeal Doorknock.
Last year’s Greater Western Sydney appeal raised $800,000 and organisers are hoping to reach $1million in donations from the region this year — and a total of $10million across the country.
The appeal is the Salvos’ primary fund-raising drive and is crucial for them to continue to offer support to more than one million Australians.
Appeals committee chairman for western Sydney Jim Taggart says when like-minded people come together it creates an energy and focus that is a ‘‘recipe for success’’.
‘‘I urge residents to contribute financially or to give a couple of hours of their day to provide resources to help families in need,’’ he said.
‘‘Someone once told me: ‘It’s not what you collect in life; it’s what you give away that counts’.’’
Funds raised by The Salvation Army go towards assisting disadvantaged Australians including people who are hungry, homeless, abandoned or abused.
