Mock trials, rookie solicitors and public information sessions will be among hundreds of events to be held around Sydney as part of National Law Week.

The week, from Monday, may 12 to Sunday, May 18, was started 30 years ago in NSW and has since spread across the country.

Law Week aims to promote public understanding of the law and its role in society as well as to raise awareness of how to use legal services and get advice. This year's Law Week theme is "Law and Justice in Your Community".

It's not all serious stuff, either. The Clued-up Kids mock-trial program introduces primary school children to the legal system, investigation procedures and the workings of the court.

Young and aspiring lawyers can take part in the Golden Gavel public speaking competition which will give them a chance to show their advocacy skills.

GUARDIAN WILL DAY

Get an attorney for free when you appoint the state government service as executor. The event will be held from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, May 17 at the Justice Precinct Offices, ground floor, 160 Marsden Street, Parramatta.

WILLS AND POWER OF ATTORNEY

Learn what makes a will valid and how to protect your interests with power of attorney. On Friday, May 16, noon to 1pm, at Max Webber Library function centre, corner of Flushcombe Road and Alpha Street at Blacktown.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Freedom Fighters Lawyers will host a free seminar to help you know what to do if you are arrested. It will be held on Thursday, May 15 at 5.30pm at the Freedom Fighters office, Caroline Chisholm Drive, Winston Hills.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Blacktown Women's and Girls' Health Centre have a talk and question-and-answer session on domestic violence, family law, the effect of domestic violence on children and early intervention. It's at 6 Prince Street on Thursday, May 15, from 10am to noon.

BUYING AND SELLING REAL ESTATE

A free talk at 2pm on Thursday, May 15 will cover topics including first-home buying, selling an established home, what to look for in retirement villages, buying and selling at the same time. It's at the Pennant Hills Community Centre, corner of Ramsay and Yarrara roads, Pennant Hills. Bookings are essential.

NEIGHBOURS AND THE LAW

This free hour talk on Tuesday, May 13, at 6pm covers what to do when neighbours disagree. It's at the Dennis Johnson Library, corner of Stanhope Parkway and Sentry Drive, Stanhope Gardens.
