We say 'the best of Cuba' and you say 'si! si!'

Tony and Avril Melhem brought Cuba to Church Street and patrons say: "Si! Si! Si!"

The restaurant, at the location since 2010, was voted the people's choice winner of the best cafe in NSW in the I Love Food awards, by the Foxtel's LifeStyle Food channel. About 99,000 people voted for the awards.

In 2012 Coco Cubano won the best coffee in NSW title in the same awards and Mr Melhem is thankful to the Parramatta community.

"They really embraced us," he said. "The Parramatta area gives people in western Sydney the opportunity and experience of going into the city without going into the city.

"We're very excited about winning and I think it really emphasises Church Street is a destination for people to go out to eat."

During a visit to Cuba in 2008 — before opening his first Coco Cubano in Darlinghurst — Mr Melhem said he had the time of his life.

"Cuba is a fascinating place. It's an island oasis of intrigue, mystery and romance and they have the world's best rum, music, dance, coffee and cigars."

He said Coco Cubano aims to offer that real Cuban experience to customers. "We have Cuban rum, Cuban cigars, Cuban coffee and cocktails. We take the best elements from Cuba and we put them into our business."
