Mother appeals for help to find daughter's killer

The mother of Sandra Cawthorne, who was murdered on Easter Monday in 2004, appealed to the public today for help to find her daughter’s killer.

Patricia Roberts said her family were desperate to find closure over her daughter’s death.

Sandra Cawthorne was 29 and pregnant, when she was shot dead in an industrial area of Arndell Park on Monday, April 12, 2004.

Her body was found in Murtha Street. She had been shot many times, with wounds to her head and torso.

‘‘It’s been 10 long years since Sandy was killed,’’ Mrs Roberts told a media briefing at Police Headquarters in Parramatta.

‘‘Her two sons, now aged 11 and 14, still wonder who killed their mum.’’

Detective Inspector Con Galea has managed the investigation into Ms Cawthorne’s murder since it happened.

‘‘We have exhausted all of our inquiries on this case, yet we are certain there are people out there in the community who know the truth,’’ Inspector Galea said.

‘‘We want those people to contact us and remind them they can do so anonymously.

‘‘We don’t need to know who you are but we do need the information you have regarding Sandra’s murder.

‘‘Sandra’s poor mother and her two boys still don’t know who killed her or why.

‘‘They’ve suffered for far too long, and deserve closure.’’

Mrs Roberts said the police had done an excellent job.

‘‘But they really need the assistance of the public to help them find my daughter’s killer,’’ she said.

Detectives have released an image of a truck seized from a property in Riverstone on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, the day after Ms Cawthorne’s murder.

The truck was seen in the Arndell Park area shortly before and shortly after Ms Cawthorne’s death.

It was eventually returned to its owner, who had reported it stolen, but police still believe it may be the vehicle Sandra’s killer or killers used to get away from the scene.

Police urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use its online reporting page: http://police.nsw.gov.au/

Information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
