Parramatta Goannas clinch hard-fought match

The Goannas kicked-off the new season with a win  over the Pennant Hills Demons at Goanna Park last weekend.

After  their Round 1 clash against Macquarie Uni was washed out, the Goannas came up against a determined Demons outfit who were coming off a victory in their first match.

Conditions were near-perfect at Goanna Park, but it was a real arm wrestle in the first quarter as the two teams tried to find an advantage and an avenue to goal.

In a low scoring half-hour, the Goannas led 1.4.10 to 1.1.7. Josh and Ryan Terrey  got their hands on the footy plenty of times and Bryce Mayne  gave the Goannas plenty of pace around the ground.

At half-time the Goannas held their lead with the score now 4.7.31 to 4.1.25. The start of the third quarter saw Ben Rogers, the League’s leading goal kicker from 2013,  land three quick goals to open up a  four-goal lead, and it appeared the Goannas would  kick on and win convincingly.

But to the Demons credit, they found their feet and kicked a couple of goals of their own to reduce the margin. The Goannas led 8.7.55 to 6.2.38 at 3/4 time.

In a hard fought last quarter, the Goannas managed just one goal and the Demons kicked a couple.

The final score saw the Goannas up by 11 points, 9.8.62 to 8.3.51.

Other players  who performed well were  Jordan Pidgeon, Mick Stacey and Stuart McKinley.

The Goannas’ next game is against Southern Power on Saturday, April 12 at Gwawley Oval (Box Road, Caringbah) at 2.30 pm.
