Top performance from hospital

HEALTH data released last week reveals Westmead Hospital is a top performer compared with other NSW hospitals, with an almost 30 per cent jump in the number of patients who leave its emergency department within four hours.

The whole of hospital program data compared 23 NSW hospitals and their percentages of emergency department patients treated within four hours in December 2013 compared with January 2013.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner said Westmead's star performance was achieved despite a 15 per cent increase in ambulance presentations and a 9 per cent increase in emergency department arrivals compared with the previous year.

"Much is asked of staff in a major trauma hospital such as Westmead, which treats more than 63,000 emergency department patients a year — and much is being delivered," Ms Skinner said.
