Hundreds of people have been evacuated after a fire in a high-rise building in Parramatta’s city centre.
The blaze started in an air conditioning unit on the seventh level of the Smith Street building shortly after 10am on Monday.
Four hundred people were evacuated from the 14-storey building and three fire crews attended.
A NSW Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the blaze generated thick smoke but quickly extinguished itself.
It started in the motor of air conditioning ducting, she said.
‘‘Crews ventilated the building and used a thermal imaging to check for any further fire spread and there was none.’’
People were allowed to return the building about 11.10am.
