Students at Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta will embrace change during the school's 125th year.
Teachers will implement the national curriculum in English, science, mathematics and history for students in years 7 and 9 as new principal Stephen Walsh (pictured above) — the second lay principal and first male principal in the school's history — takes the reins.
Mr Walsh, a former geography and economics teacher, was last principal at St Joseph's Catholic College at Gosford, and said the depth of history and tradition at OLMC was a significant difference between the college and his last post.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to lead a wonderful education community," he said
Mr Walsh spent last term getting to know the school and the legacy of its founder Catherine McAuley.
"There's never time to rest in education," he said. "Change is a dynamic that we all need to learn to respond to."
Mr Walsh said year 12 students had chosen "Mercy Pride in 125" as the theme for the anniversary celebrations.
"There is a fabulous pride and spirit in the college," he said. "For me the 125 is like a really big birthday party."
