Technically it's inside the square but with a floating garden terrace and a lobby in the sky, it's definitely outside the square too.
The winner of the Parramatta Square design competition is a plan for striking twin towers with a sky terrace and lobby, a retail podium and connections to bus and train stations.
The design by Sydney firm Johnson Pilton Walker was selected out of 73 submissions from around the world.
The linked commercial towers will function as two of the key structures of the three-hectare Parramatta Square site in the central business district.
The jury of industry experts judged on innovation, design, feasibility and sustainability.
"The JPW scheme proposes highly legible, naturally lit connection between the rail station concourse and future Parramatta Square, with multiple opportunities for retail activation on two levels," the jury said.
A Parramatta Council spokeswoman said they were hopeful construction would be completed within the next five years.
