‘‘Vicious unprovoked attack’’ in Parramatta food court

A 23-YEAR-OLD Mays Hill man has been arrested in relation to the assault of two men at a shopping centre on Church Street, Parramatta, earlier this afternoon.

Speaking at a media briefing at Parramatta police station, Inspector Robert Toynton said he could only describe the incident as ‘‘a vicious unprovoked attack’’.

He said police will allege a man punched a 26-year-old Rockdale man several times to the face in a busy food court in a Parramatta shopping centre before punching a 62-year-old man from Goulburn in the head, punching him unconscious.

Sergeant Toynton said ‘‘a violent struggle has ensued between him and a security guard’’ and the man fled.

He was arrested a short time later.

Sergeant Toynton said the assaults were captured on CCTV footage.

The 62-year-old remains in a stable condition at Westmead Hospital. The younger victim sustained soft tissue injuries, but he did not go to hospital.

‘‘The assaults appear unprovoked ... [and], no, he did not know these people,’’ Sergeant Toynton said.

He said the offender was not armed, despite earlier suggestions he might have been.

Sergeant Toyton urged anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
