Federal Parramatta MP Julie Owens has been appointed Labor’s parliamentary secretary for small business and education spokeswoman.
Ms Owens said she had a ‘‘great interest’’ in both areas.
‘‘On the small business side, I have been both a small business operator and [chief executive] of a small business trade association, the Association for Independent Record Labels for several years,’’ Ms Owens said.‘‘This new position ... will give me an opportunity to work with our local small businesses and those around Australia to help develop a policy framework that meets their needs and supports their aspirations,’’ Ms Owens said.
She said she was delighted to be working as Labor’s parliamentary secretary to the opposition spokeswoman for education Kate Ellis.
‘‘Like many people in our community, I am the first in my family to gain a university degree, impossible without strong support at school.
‘‘I know first-hand that school education is a foundation stone for a good life. It opens doors to employment and opportunity, increases our ability to understand and appreciate the world around us and improves our capacity to solve the problems of life as they arise.’’
