WORK is under way to transform the old and dingy Greystanes Shopping Centre into a sleek and modern community hub.
The new-look shopping centre will include a larger Woolworths supermarket, 20 shops and create more than 400 jobs during construction and 250 jobs in the centre.
Woolworths Limited development manager Savanah Whitby said the centre provided a lot of potential.
"There was a lot of potential to have a really great centre in this catchment," she said. "There is another good centre in the local area but this said something to us with people frequenting this centre even though it's in such a worse state than the others.
"So we knew there was great potential there for a retailer to do something special."
The first phase of construction will see the demolition and replacement of 10 existing shops adjacent to the car park, with many of the existing retailers expected to reopen in the new year. Later stages will see the redevelopment of the internal mall, the relocation of the Woolworths store and an expansion of car parking to 284 spaces.
The sound of building works and sight of construction equipment have brought relief for local residents, who have long mourned the decline of the once bustling suburban centre.
