The federal government announced that if re-elected it would contribute $850,000 in federal funding towards a new pavilion at Parramatta Rugby Club’s home ground at Granville Park, Merrylands.
Sports Minister Don Farrell, said funding would go towards construction of a modern pavilion with separate change rooms, media and meeting rooms, a gym facility and offices.
New lighting towers and security fencing were also planned.
“This commitment today shows that Federal Labor is serious about investing in the club and its community and helping them to meet future challenges and opportunities.”
Speaking at Granville Park on Saturday Parramatta MP Julie Owens welcomed the government’s plan to provide funding for the club.
Ms Owens said the club’s membership and the number of registered players at Parramatta Rugby Club had quadrupled since 2010. It now had 400 registered players and 800 members.
“On weekends, the club attracts up to 1000 supporters and visitors and the current pavilion, which was built in the 1920s, is so dilapidated it cannot handle any greater volume of spectators,” she said.
