The number of homeless people on Parramatta City streets has decreased from 317 to 282 a recent count found.
More than 95 volunteers took part in the council’s annual homelessness street count which revealed 282 homeless people — 25 who were rough sleepers and 257 in emergency and crisis accommodation.
Parramatta lord mayor John Chedid said the decrease showed targeted programs were making a difference.
“The recent provision of extra accommodation and support services has also enabled more people to be housed for longer periods instead of temporary accommodation,’’ Cr Chedid said.
The data helps the council and homeless support services to develop responses to further reduce homelessness and improve their wellbeing.
The 2013 Homeless Street Count was supported by local businesses, service providers, police and the Parramatta Region Homelessness Interagency.
