Figuring out a connection

LOCAL artist Michael Chin is on a mission to create a spiritual connection with the digital realm.

In collaboration with TaikOz, he will try to create a spiritual experience through technology and digital devices in his latest art masterpiece, Project O.

"Project O is a concept I have come up with and is based on the symbol of the circle and explores its 'symbology' throughout time and civilisation," Chin said. "I feel we have lost our spirituality or find it hard to get in touch or connect with something spiritual.

"I'm trying to explore how we can connect with something spiritual through modern conveniences or technologies."

The project incorporates videos, photography with computer-generated music and live performances.

The sound will be wirelessly transmitted through headphones which the audience will wear.

"I'm actually experimenting with the audience, who will be watching a live performance while listening to the electronic soundtrack I have composed," Chin said.

"I'm looking at ways technology, sound and vision create an immersive experience through the sensors."

The idea for the project came to Michael Chin through a dream.

"I thought about how the Egyptians built pyramids and there was Stonehenge and how these amazing things were built in primitive times," he said.

"These primitive cultures knew about celestial bodies and about their procession without the use of technology.

"Now we use technology to do the thinking to do the most mundane of tasks and I think how have we lost this spiritual connection and knowledge that these primitive civilisations once had."

Project O will be performed this year.
