Chocolate the order of the day as romance blossomed

IT might not have the appeal of Paris or Venice but ladies looking for romance should pack their bags and head to Westmead after Facebook data found it was Sydney's most romantic suburb.

After reviewing status updates and check-ins across Australia on Valentine's Day it was revealed Westmead took out the top spot with the most mentions of "love", "Valentine", "chocolate" and "roses".

Australians spend more than $900 million on Valentine's Day with data showing Facebook users mostly talked about receiving roses in the lead-up to the day.

But it seems most other halves ignored the hints and gave their loved ones chocolates instead as they were the most talked about gift on the day.

An IBISWorld report found most people spend $41 on their partner for Valentine's Day.

General manager Karen Dobie said more expensive gifts, like jewellery and getaways, were back on the agenda this year.

About $34 million was spent on a romantic dinner while $437 million was spent on romantic weekends away.

About $46 million was spent on flowers on Valentine's Day.
