VIDEO: Joey inspects new Merrylands home

AT 236 days of age, this kangaroo joey isn’t quite ready to race Santa Claus through the blazing sun.

But should Santa come looking for Hamish next year he will be in Central Gardens, Merrylands, with his 14 jumping animal friends.

Watch the Suns' video filmed at Central Gardens by Carlos Furtado below:

Hamish will officially join the Central Gardens family in six months, ‘‘once he’s been weaned off the formula milk’’, said animal keeper Rebecca Klarich.

‘‘He’s being hand-raised by a friend of mine after his mother abandoned him.’’

Many more animals were enroute to the park, she said. ‘‘We’ve got lots more finches, small parrots, native ducks and swans coming — and hopefully some kookaburras,’’ Ms Klarich said.

The garden’s newly refurbished enclosures were reopened by Holroyd mayor Ross Grove on Saturday.

Holroyd Council contributed $125,000 to the project and received $125,000 from the NSW government’s metropolitan greenspace program.

Features include two new aviaries, predator-proof fencing,  signage, seating and paving.

A water harvesting project has also been completed, which has allowed the park’s waterfall feature to be turned back on in time for Christmas.
