Police have charged a man after he allegedly lit a fire on a train near Westmead on Friday .
A 25-year-old man was travelling on a train headed for the city from Springwood about 8.20pm, Friday, November 23.
As the train approached Westmead railway station the man allegedly set fire to a pile of paper on the top level of the carriage, causing extensive damage to a number of seats.
The fire was extinguished and the man was arrested at Parramatta train station and conveyed to Parramatta police station.
He was subsequently charged with lighting a fire on a train and damage property by fire.
The man was given conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on the January 16.
