For the second consecutive year the GWS Giants have enjoyed the luxury of the top three picks at the AFL National Draft.
Last night Lachie Whitfield was chosen as the Giants number one pick.
The classy midfielder will join 2011 number one pick Jonathon Patton at GWS as the western Sydney club continue to build one of the most talented young rosters in the competition.
Number two pick Jonathan O’Rourke will also add to the club’s midfield stocks while third choice Lachie Plowman will bolster the defensive line.
Giants list manager Stephen Silvagni was satisfied with last night’s outcome.
‘‘We are really delighted that we got two core midfielders,’’ he said.
He also said the club’s choice to overlook forward options was not intentional.
‘‘We just basically wanted the two best players in the draft.
‘‘It just happens that they both are midfielders.’’
Asked if they considered picking Whitfield at three, to remove ease the pressure that comes along with the status as a number one pick, Silvangi replied, ‘‘No’’.
