Wenty scramble into the top four

09 Sep, 2009 02:35 PM
WENTWORTHVILLE secured a top-four place in the NSW Cup by defeating Western Suburbs 28-18 in the final round at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.

It was an improved display on recent form from the defending premiers.

Wenty led 22-0 well into the second half before allowing Wests late points.

Wenty gained the lead after 17 minutes when Junior Paulo was first to a kick from Mark O'Grady.

That lead was increased to 10-0 when winger Etu Uaisele scored after a great break from Martin Lewis.

There was no love lost between both sides and referee David Munro had had enough when he sent Western Suburbs forward Daine Laurie to the sin bin just two minutes before the break.

Laurie may have been stirred up but Wenty needed no stirring into action. It was all action as they scored two tries in three minutes just after the resumption.

The first came in the 46th minute when Tim Mortimer split the defence and put half-back Shane Croft on his way to the try line.

Three minutes later a Wenty kick looked to be rolling over the touchline but a quick-thinking Uaisele palmed the ball infield.

Forwards Jeremy Latimore and Brendan Oake kept the attack alive before Croft raced away for his second try.

Wests bounced back when Charlie Herekotukutuku stepped inside the defence and scored near the posts in the 56th minute.

They were back with a rough chance when hooker Samual Hoare burrowed over five minutes later.

Croft ended that chance when he made it a hat-trick after a great weaving run.

The Wests' prolific scorer Rhys Pritchard made it respectable with his 17th try of the season.

The serious part of the season now starts for Wenty.
