It's a knockout

02 Dec, 2009 03:00 AM
IT took just 40 seconds for Winston Hills boxer Josh Francis to knock out his latest opponent in an amateur fight night in the super heavy division early last month.

``It was pretty fast,'' Francis, who is known as one of the smallest fighters in his weight division, said.

``I didn't really know much about him before the fight I never really want to know much about them so I wasn't expecting it to be that quick.''

Francis' dominance and power were on display from his first punch which landed flush on his rival's chin. After the restart, it was only a matter of seconds before Francis let loose a storm of powerful blows that the opponent despite battling bravely was unable to withstand.

The referee had no choice but to stop the fight well before the conclusion of the first round .

``It was a good feeling,'' Francis said of the win.

The 24-year-old now has three wins from three fights under his belt in amateur boxing and he seems to be taking it all in his stride.

``Things are going good and I am happy with the way I am fighting,'' he said. ``The plan is now to get lots of fights and win them and go from there.''

He's only been boxing for a year-and-a-half and he has plans next year to trial for the Commonwealth Games.

``I am just going to see what happens. I am not sure if I have any more fights this year, but for now I will keep up my training five days a week,'' he said.

He trains at the Castle Hill Self Defence Centre. Francis was a footy player before he took to the boxing ring, but an injury forced him off the field and into the ring.

``I damaged my neck and I was told I couldn't play footy any more so I wanted to still play a sport and keep fit and I needed to do something so I started boxing. I love it,'' he said.
