THE Winston Hills Little Athletics Centre athletes took part in the recent State Relay Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre.
The State Relay Championships is the largest event on the NSW Little Athletics Association calendar and it attracts teams from all over the state.
Winston Hills entered 48 teams from the under8s to under17s age groups and came home with one gold medal, five silver and two bronze, along with 14 top-eight finishers.
The under14s girls team of Mayura Sandrasegaran, Jessica Xiao, Paletina Lemi and Taylah Sengul took out first place in the shot put/discus team event with a total score of 3359 points, breaking the previous state record in this event of 3074 points.
So convincing was their win that they more than doubled the score of the team in second place on 1605 points.
In the process, Taylah broke the under14s girls state record in the discus with a throw of 44.76metres, breaking the previous state record of 43.42metres.
It was a ``nearly'' year for Holroyd Little Athletics Centre, with two teams only just missing gold and three more narrowly missing out on medals altogether.
The junior middle distance girls, the club's biggest hope for gold, were just beaten by state record holders Manly.
``At the last baton change we were 200 metres behind and we made 150 in the last 800 but it wasn't enough,'' said coaching co-ordinator Richard Lamas.
He lamented the disqualification of the under12s girls 4x100-metres relay team who were in line for a bronze medal.
``It was a bit touch and go,'' he said.
