Not all gloom for first graders

Not all gloom for first graders

28 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
WHEN Parramatta lose first grade outright, lose their first Twenty20 game and are beaten in thirds, fourths and fifths, that should define a bleak weekend.

There were cricketing compensations, however.

Teenager Sean Abbott confirmed his glittering future with a strong all-round performance in first grade, and Adam Turrell scored a brilliant century in the T20 Poidevin-Gray match.

Sutherland had put Parramatta in on the first day, banking on Test opener Phil Jacques's availability for the second.

Their bowlers had done their bit by dismissing Parramatta for 221.

And so Sutherland's Jacques duly arrived at the Glenn McGrath Oval crease on Saturday with the score at 4-107.

When he left after scoring 93 in a 170-run partnership with rising star Nick Maddinson, the first-innings points were Sutherland's.

The bowler to deprive Jacques of his third century of the season was Abbott, who

finished with 4-95. Captain Michael Woods was punished but took 4-59 from 11 overs.

Worse punishment awaited Parramatta.

The visitors succumbed for 69, of which Abbott contributed a resolute 12 not out.

It mightn't be a lot, but combined with his unbeaten 59 not out in the first innings, reflected a strong cricketing character.

Meanwhile, Old Kings was the site of a Twenty20 double-header on Sunday.

Parramatta firsts restricted Campbelltown Camden to 8-139 and needed 11 runs in the final over to win, but two wickets ended their chances.

Turrell's blazing unbeaten 116, including 16 fours, saw Parramatta reach a formidable 1-194 in the Poidevin-Gray T20.

Rain ended Campbelltown Camden's chance to reply.

Meantime, Parramatta seconds, 7-262, with Roger Frare scoring 97, defeated Sutherland 247.

Parramatta firsts play Northern District at Waitara Oval this Saturday.
