Big Ben chimes in for Parramatta

27 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
STATISTICS don't always tell the true story but they don't lie about Andrew Marr.

The paceman returned his season's best figure of 5-35 as Parramatta took the limited-overs game and a bonus point against Mosman in the first-grade cricket at Old Kings on Saturday.

Marr's season return now reads 28 wickets at 19.21, placing him fourth on the first-grade statistical table.

While he's in this from, Parramatta will be happy to swing.

Marr's might saw Mosman dismissed for 152 and Parramatta reeled the total in for the loss of four wickets. Nick Watkins, 35, and Jason Kelly, unbeaten on 40, were the main men.

Parramatta are now three points outside the top six and have the chance to move further up the ladder when they meet lowly Gordon away on Saturday at the start of a two-day round.

Alas, Parramatta went out with a whimper in the A.W.Green Shield semi-finals.

Manly-Warringah 3-76 defeated Parramatta 74 at Manly Oval.

The Orioles have got their season back on the mound in the major baseball league.

Following a midweek 4-4 draw, a determined Orioles overpowered Ryde 11-3 in Sunday's return after the batters re-discovered the form that gave the Orioles such a blazing start to the season.

Dane Wigg, Gavin Fingleson and Shane Benson led the hits with three apiece.

Parramatta will blood several young players in the Eels' first rugby league trial of the season against St George Illawarra in Perth on Valentine's Day, February 14.

The squad includes established Eels like Fuifui Moimoi, Krisnan Inu, Daniel Mortimer and Eric Grothe. Nathan Hindmarsh has also been named but is unlikely to play, having just resumed training after a left-wrist re-construction.

However, the real interest lies in the younger players coach Daniel Anderson has selected.

They include Mitchell Allgood, Justin Horo, Tom Humble, Taniela Lasalo, Anthony Mitchell and Pele Peletelese. New forward signings Justin Poore and Shane Shackleton will have their first runs.

Parramatta has started the painful process of easing salary cap pressure by releasing Weller Hauraki a season early to Super League outfit the Celtic Crusaders.
